If you haven’t read the first book, there will probably be a few little spoilers in this review, but I will try to be as vague as possible!
It’s been a little while since I read the first book, but I was able to get right back into this one even though I don’t really remember it. The characters are reintroduced as the story goes on, as well as what happened before. It’s not a normal recap that takes tons of pages, but it’s molded together with Lex’s thoughts and her guilt of what she let happen in the last book.
If you loved all the funny moments, sarcasm and attitude of Lex from the last book, then you’ll love this just as much! Even though Lex has a lot more to deal with on her conscience, she still manages to keep it fun. This book gets more serious so the fun really helps keep it flowing. For instance, the death of someone from the first book gives her so much guilt, thinking it’s her fault and that she could have prevented it, but talking to them later and getting crap from them lifted the mood and helped her deal with it.
There’s a few more tragedies that happen in Croak as the book goes on, and of course having Zara running around Damning people really raises the tension. The ending was so awesome, and there are many things that are revealed, some secrets are hinted at but I think are being saved for a big reveal in the next book. A lot of characters die in this book, a lot of awesome ones too but it’s all part of the awesome and intense story.
If you loved the first book, definitely read this! Or at least go and give the first one a try!
