More like 3 1/2 stars. I did enjoy this book and like the writing. Its a very character and relationship driven book more so than any plot and I really dig that. It was just longer than I think it needed to be and suffered a bit for it.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

Lots of pros that made my heart sing but the cons made me feel conflicted.

Pros:
+ diverse characters (in terms of ethnicity & sexual orientation)
+ great exploration of race vs. ethnicity
+ solid platonic friendship without a hint romance
+ love of family & friends
+ introspective characters
+ simple but impactful prose
+ grappling with grief and death and life

Cons:
+ underlying misogyny
+ unfounded violence
+ lack of accountability for attempted date rape

I've cried reading books before. I've gotten a little misty-eyed and emotional. But I don't think I've ever openly wept as much as I did reading the beautiful words in this book.
