This was such a cute and sweet second chance romance. I really enjoy it. Garrett and Callie were just cute together. I like how this was such an effortless re-connection. Two adults that separated because of distance meet back up and come back together. I like that there wasn't any miscommunication and drama. It was just sweet and beautiful. That scene with Garret's dog, Snoopy was a tearjerker. Cried buckets. Can't wait for more from this this book world.
Callie moves home for a year, discovering a passion for teaching as well as her ex-boyfriend in this contemporary romance.
Over the break, I wanted a fun, lighthearted, smutty romance novel. It’s hard to find one of those in a market saturated with them. That said, I’ve had luck with Emma Chase’s books in the past so I thought I would give her latest novel a try. While it wasn’t my favorite book by hers, it was a fun uplifting story about one woman discovering her home.
Callie and Garrett are likable, if not all that original, characters. You have your cocky ex-football player turned coach and your sweet drama nerd turned high school director. Their story – both as individuals and as a couple – was executed without flaw over the course of the novel. There were no surprises, no twists, just two people learning to live and love each other again.
I feel like so many stories focus on the “drama” of a relationship without focusing on the day to day aspects of a relationship. While Callie and Garrett’s relationship have moments of drama, there is a nice balance between their emotional moments and their normal day lives. I wish more time had been spend with them making connections outside their romance, but otherwise it’s not a bad way to spend one afternoon.
tl;dr A pleasant, yet unoriginal and predictable, story about a woman going home to discover all the things she never knew she missed.
Getting Schooled nailed what its like to be a high school teacher! I was howling with laughter and nodding along as Garrett and Callie shared their stories of teaching woe! I think this kinship with the main characters made Getting Schooled even more enjoyable for me.
At its heart, Getting Schooled is a second chance love story. Garrett and Callie didn't have a big, tragic break up. They just finished high school and went to college on opposite sides of the country. Callie is back in Lakeside, NJ to help care for her parents and decides to take a temporary job teaching drama. Garrett, a history teacher and football coach, is more than happy to help teach Callie the ropes. If it happens to resume their carnal relationship, all the better. The drama comes from wondering what will happen when the school year ends and Callie is set to go back to California and her dream job. These two still carry a torch for each other, but both of them have specific dreams...and Callie's dream is in California, not New Jersey.
I loved the students in the story as well. They added some levity to romance and so many of them reminded me of some of my students. Also, Callie's parents are a hoot! Getting Schooled is one of those books that will put a smile on your face, warm your heart, and have you laughing like a lunatic!
Narrated by Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber, the audiobook is perfection. These two narrators are two of my favorites and if you listen, you will quickly see why. They have perfect timing and their narration immerses you into the story! I certainly will listen to this multiple times!
