Units build on the work covered at primary level. Terminology is consistent with the National Literacy Strategy - modified only as necessary for the future demands of GCSE / Standard Grade. Each unit starts with clearly specified learning objectives and offers a clear path through a carefully structured sequence of activities culminating in opportunities for self-assessment. Skills in reading and writing and in speaking and listening are fully integrated. Suggestions for oral work are made throughout, encouraging students to develop metacognition thinking skills. The content of each unit, aimed at the central core of the ability range, aims to stretch students but also motivate them. It pays close attention to the need for covering the wide range of non-fiction materials.
