This pack provides a classroom resource to support the teaching of data-handling within the framework of the National Curriculum. It addresses the need for general purpose software, such as databases and spreadsheets, which can be used in all subject areas, not only in mathematics, and which is relevant to the world outside the classroom. The first section of the pack constitutes a comprehensive guide to the role of databases and spreadsheets in schools, explaining how such software can be used to deliver the data handling component of the National Curriculum. It gives practical advice on matching the programs available to the reader's needs, and on the organization of computer-assisted learning in a particular teaching situation. This is backed up by 22 activities, based in real-life contexts, which use databases and spreadsheets to help students develop data handling skills. The second section comprises photocopiable worksheets for students who have undergone extensive trialing in schools. These are accompanied by detailed and time-saving teacher's notes. Michael Hammond has also written three C.A.L. modules for Sheffield Polytechnic, plus articles in "Micromath" and "Teaching Statistics".
