As a young man, Fidel drempt of a free and independent Cuba. He led a ragged band of guerrilla fighters who fought the dictator Fulgencia Batista. With the support of most Cubans, Fidel overthrew him. Castro's new government took land from the rich to give to the poor, and taught the people to read and write. But his friendship with the Soviet Union made the USA his enemy; also, many Cubans felt he had too much power.
