This series covers the whole of prehistory from the formation of the universe to the first settlements and beginning of history. The six volumes follow on from each other chronologically providing the young reader with an introduction to such subjects as the birth of the earth, the reign of the dinosaurs and the evolution of our present-day horses, elephants, apes and cats. This particular book is about the development of humans from bands of nomadic hunter-gatherers, who progressed to growing crops and domesticating animals and finally became settled city-dwellers by 2,700 BC. It also tells the young reader about the discovery of metal, woollen clothes, pottery, the plough and irrigation and explains about the different crops grown in different parts of the world - wheat and barley in Europe, rice in the East, maize and avocadoes in the Americas. As farming methods improved people turned to other skills. Crafts peopled bartered their goods with farmers and merchants and the modern social pattern had begun.
