The "Technology in Action" series explains how science and human ingenuity have been applied to create the technologies demanded in a constantly changing world. It examines the reasons why changes and developments are necessary, and shows how problems are solved to bring about these changes. Each book in the series deals with the subject matter within a thematic framework, showing how different technologies combine to create an evolving "state of the art". The author begins by outlining the geography of the oceans and the valuable resources that they contain. The technology that has made possible the mapping of both the oceans themselves and the rocks beneath the seabed is explained clearly, before the book moves on to consider the ways in which humans have been able to voyage into the undersea world. The ongoing development of breathing apparatus and diving equipment, which has allowed humans to dive to depths previously thought off limits, is described, and there are separate sections on the wide variety of undersea craft such as submersibles, bathyscaphes and submarines.
The author goes on to look at oil and gas production and the ways in which drilling in very deep water has been made possible. Further sections concentrate on renewable energy from the sea and undersea habitats. The author is an oceanographer specialising in the monotoring of the marine environment. He also sits on the Education Committee of the Society for Underwater Technology.
