Fast summer read, light and mildly amusing. The story doesn't have a lot of substance, but it's full of atmosphere. [a:Dorothea Benton Frank|36935|Dorothea Benton Frank|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1369417602p2/36935.jpg] evokes the South with it's charm and tradition and vestiges of class exceptionally.

The characters are all well developed, though in the beginning it's a little difficult to keep track of who's who. It might help to have read [b:Plantation|588959|Mountain Spirits A Chronicle of Corn Whiskey from King James' Ulster Plantation to America's Appalachians and the Moonshine Life|Joseph E. Dabney|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387742113i/588959._SY75_.jpg|575747] but it's certainly not necessary. The events in this book are certainly an effect from that one, but you can enter into the story here and not feel like you've missed anything.

I thought it was a bit weird that I continued to suspect that Eric and Amelia were dating, regardless of being first cousins. Though I did like that the book was tasteful even when it was a little slutty for fun.

The whole thing is written well enough. Eccentric in a fun Southern way, a little funny, a little poetic and a nice way to spend a summer afternoon.
