This illustrated book describes the dramatic and tragic Challenger accident in the "Great Disaster" series. In January 1986, the explosion shocked the world and dealt a major blow to the American Space Program. This book sets out to provide an explanation for its occurrence. Opening with a dramatic account of the sequence of events prior to lift-off, the author then describes how the initially successful launch led to the horrific explosion. In subsequent chapters, the author examines the scientific causes of the explosion, suggesting what may be learned from the results of the official enquiry. He also describes the purpose of mission 51-L and the selection of the crew. Further chapters are devoted to the development of the shuttle, from initial concept, design and structure to its historic test-flights and achievements. The typical activities of a shuttle mission, such as the launch or repair of satellites are also described. Final chapters look at recent American, European and Soviet developments in space exploration. The work includes many contemporary photographs.
