In this text, Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992) gives a photographic reading of an atlas. Using the method of macro photography, Ghirri located the place in which all the signs of the earth, from natural to man-made, are represented on the map: mountains, lakes, pyramids, oceans, cities, villages, stars and the sun. Grouped together in a system of universally accepted conventional signs, Ghirri considered these geographical signs to be tantamount to other everyday objects, and in this way could be read as images. This book is an investigation of the Seventies, which preceded the photographic experience of his landscape work of the Eighties. It distinguished the artistic research of Ghirri and other photographers, and contributed towards the re-establishment of Italian photography.
