Born in Britain and Spain respectively and now working in Milan, Perry King and Santiago Miranda represent a new kind of internationalism in design, based not on simple-minded functionalism and uniformity, but on the combination of poetry and pragmatism. They use design to civilize technology, giving industrially produced objects the character that handmade artifacts once had, and making sense of complex machinery with their determination to give design a wider cultural role. The work of King and Miranda is wide-ranging, encompassing graphic as well as interiors, furniture and industrial design. They have had commissions in France, Japan, the United States, Italy, Spain and Britain. They have acted as consultants to huge industrial concerns such as Olivetty, as well as to small artisan glassware companies.
