Starting out from humble beginnings as a garden produce business in the 1820s, Belle Vue developed into one of the premier entertainment venues in the North West. At its peak, Belle Vue was packed full of funfairs, dancing, fireworks, music, sport and many other kinds of entertainment, which saw millions of visitors each year.
In 1926, Belle Vue was the host of the first Greyhound Association Meeting as well as the location of the first purpose-built greyhound stadium in the UK, which is all that remains of Belle Vue today. Three years later saw the opening of the state-of-the-art speedway stadium which was home to the Belle Vue Aces team for nearly forty years.
As Belle Vue expanded, visitors were subject to the delights of the Zoo filled with amazing animals, the annual Christmas circus which held host to incredible international acts and performances at the King's Hall from the likes of Louis Armstrong and Led Zeppelin.
Before its untimely demise in the 70s and 80s, Belle Vue was a place for the North West to be proud of, a fantasy destination that was only a stone's throw away. Yet Belle Vue still holds a place in many people's hearts and memories, and this book helps bring those memories back to life.
