While the fields of fiber optic sensing and fiber optic communications have always been treated as separate and distinct, they share more in common than in difference. Traditional texts do not make the seemingly obvious connections between the two. This book serves to remove that gap and provide the practicing engineer and/or advanced student with a firm, realistic understanding of the modulation and manipulation of an optical field. Emphasis is placed on providing real-world engineering implementation of systems that modulate the optical field, be it by an external perturbation (that is, a sensor application) or by data transmission. It covers the fundamentals for both sensing and communication applications, modulation methods for both, components, and real-world engineering designs for both types of systems. It also deals with "optical convergence" - the emerging field of simultaneous sensing and communications along a single optical fiber. The book includes a CD-ROM with a searchable version of the text and engineering design tools. Practicing engineers and students need an up-to-date text/reference that contains the engineering fundamentals for both types of systems. Such a book is not currently available. This book will be used by practicing engineers and scientists in all sorts of sensing and communication applications. These individuals are probably typified by the members of the Instrument Society of America or readers of Sensor magazine. The book does not "require" that the reader have a graduate degree in any particular discipline, but it is aimed at a technically cognizant audience. As a university professor, I have also aimed this text to serve as a possible textbookfor classroom instruction. The author is on the board of Sensors magazine and writes frequently for it, guaranteeing a review or mention in that publication, which hits directly at a large segment of the audience we want to reach. He also attends many conferences and presents short courses on the topics covered by the book, so he will be a good "self-promoter." The book also has strong adoption potential in fiber optic communications and sensors courses. Dr. Fuhr teaches courses in both subjects at SJSU and intends to adopt the text for his own use. (His communications course is offered each semester with approximately 50 students enrolled.) This looks like a good opportunity to offer a foundation text/reference that covers the fiber optic engineering field as a unified technology, taking advantage of the recent trend toward optical convergence. Many of the other standard texts are outdated. The author's bona fides and connections are great - he ahs a good name in the field and is eager to have his own text, after contributing chapters to several others and writing many articles. He is a good "bridge author," with strong connections in industry as well as academia/research labs, and a self-promoter. Peter L. Fuhr has been involved in the areas of semiconductor lasers, fiber optic sensor systems, communications (optical, wireless and digital), and spacecraft experiment design for the past 21 years. He has received major funding from private industries as well as government agencies such as the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Department of Transportation, NIOSH and the National Science Foundation. His current ongoing research interests include: investigation of simultaneous sensingand communication on otical fibers; smart materials and structures; development of fiber optic sensors; signal processing and multiplexing; optical and wireless communication systems and protocols; and on-orbit testing of space structures. His most recent activities have involved sensing and interrogation schemes for instrumented buildings - "smart civil structures." In addition to sensing, he has developed and demonstrated novel methods for the remote interrogation and data retrieval from instrumented structures using the Internet. He has authored many technical journal and conference publications and has served as the Chair in numerous Symposia Technical Sessions. His research efforts have been featured in a variety of popular press news stories including the BBC, ABC, CBS, CTV, NBC, Mutual Radio. AP, Business Week, Laser Focus World, Photonics Spectra, Wired IEEE Spectrum, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering magazine, Scientific American and New Scientist as well as worldwide newspaper stories. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and has served as a Technical Advisor to the U. S. President's Office of Science and Technology. *The only book available to combine two important areas of fiber optics- communication and sensing *Renowned author has served as Technical Advisor to the U.S. President's Office of Science and Technology, and has had his research featured in such prominent media outlets as Business Week, Scientific American, ABC, CBS and NBC *Focus is on real-world implementations, so that engineers can readily apply the theories discussed to their research and projects
