The sensationalism of Ernst Mach had exercised a powerful influence - via the members of the Vienna Circle - on later philosophy of science. Alexander argues persuasively that sensationalism, with its emphasis on the purely "descriptive" role of science, fails to do justice to its equally important explanatory role.
