A very succinct description of Christian sacraments might be that they are sacred signs instituted by Christ, through which God bestows his grace or supernatural assistance upon us. This book looks in turn at three sacraments of healing: anointing and the laying on of hands, the ministry of reconciliation (as confession in the presence of a priest is now called) and Holy Communion. The author wishes to encourage Christians, both within the Church of England and in the wider universal Church, to rediscover the healing power of the sacraments and to encourage the clergy to make them widely available as a priority in their ministries. He hopes that those on the fast-growing evangelical/charismatic wing of the Church may also come to see the value of a sacramental approach, and seeks to provide a counterbalance to the more subjective style of individual preachers/healers, often in itinerant healing ministries, who increasingly dominate the Christian landscape but who occasionally get the healing ministry a bad press.
