From time to time, disturbances in British schools have received a certain amount of attention in both the popular press and in academic circles. Reports invariably suggest to the outsider that our schools are occasionally disrupted by a minority of aggressive and anti-establishment pupils, whose criminal activities are best rooted out, punished severely and then set aside so the schools can get on with their main business of educating young people. This book focuses on one particular kind of disturbance in our schools, namely protests by pupils. To this end a body of evidence from many different historical and contemporary sources is drawn upon, to explore the significance of this largely neglected aspect of the behaviour of children and young people. In the process, it becomes apparent that protests by pupils should be taken seriously as a critical reflection on the state of education of young people, and schools in particular.
