This book explores the issues and responses of city development through the turbulent eighties. The editors have brought together a series of sketches which aim to provide an account of the problems and opportunities of city planning but one which also illustrates the range of perspectives on offer. The book is divided into three parts. The first concerns city planning issues and responses as seen by practitioners in Manchester, Leeds, Bradford and Birmingham. The second part deals with research findings on aspects of city development and planning, describing and exploring the relationship between changing conditions and responses. The final part provides a consideration and cautionary note on the implications of the increased market orientation of planning on the role of the system, the planner and the planned.
