This work argues that in the modern world, ethical justification needs to be grounded in rational action for human well-being; and that justifiable professional conduct is not reasonably grounded unless and until it can be related to this basic value. It helps each occupation to identify if it is to provide adequate justification for its conduct and links the relatively recent rediscovery of "ethics" with the continuing significance of the idea of professionalism in modern societies affected by Anglo-American traditions. The work concludes with a proposal for a national standing commission on the professions which could help in strengthening the ethical justification of professional conduct, provided certain conditions are met.
