In 1995, professional footballers Bruce Grobbelaar, John Fashanu and Hans Segers were arrested along with a Malaysian associate, Heng Suan-Lim, charged with fixing football match results. Grobbelaar was alleged to have accepted a large sum of money to throw a football match in 1994, and the "Sun" newspaper produced videotaped evidence claiming to show Grobbelaar receiving the money from his ex-business partner Chris Vincent. The case of Grobelaar, Fashanu, Segers and Suan-Lim will be heard in the summer of 1996. This work seeks to look beyond the material that will be presented in court when the case is heard. It claims that behind the surface tale of sporting corruption lies a deeper, darker story of personal and sexual betrayal, and tries to uncover the personal pressures and professional resentments that drove Grobbelaar to act as he did.
