Sir Thomas blamey is the only Australian soldier to reach the rank of Field Marshal and is generally accepted to be Australia's most important and greatest soldier. This was despite his not being Australia's most accomplished battlefield commander or a great innovator or reformer. He was not loved, admired or even respected by many of the soldiers he commanded and the politicians he worked with, and his career was marked by numerous controversies. This is the Army's official biography of Blamey and seeks to tell his story, warts and all. However, it also looks beyond the controversies to assess what Blamey achieved as Australia's top soldier during World War II and to examine his conduct.
