Retexturing of road surfacings by mechanical means in order to restore skidding resistance has been used for some years in the UK, because it is inexpensive, quick and takes advantage of the material already present. This report details the results of the first systematic study to assess the performance and durability of various treatments. Four techniques (scabbling, bush hammering, orthogonal flail grooving and shot-blasting), were studied in road trials, and their efficacy was assessed over a three year period.
