РЕЦЕНЗИЯ:
В свое время мне очень так даже неплохо зашел дебютный роман Гу «Я верю в любовь». Он не был идеальным, но грел мне душу дорамными отсылочками и вообще была довольно легкой и забавной, чтобы скоротать вечерок. «Чувства, которые ты вызываешь» же на голову выше, сразу видно, что автор расписался и больше сил вложил в роман. На мой обывательский взгляд конкретно этот роман можно смело ставить в один ряд с романами Морган Мэтсон (а для меня это огого показатель).
Очень важным аспектом романа является тот факт, что главой темой романа является личностный рост героини. В самом начале повествования главная героиня Клэра предстает немного эгоистичной и легкомысленной личностью. Она «школьный клоун», стараюсь отгородиться от окружающих и, боясь привязанностей, девушка все превращает в шутку и, надо отметить, что частенько эти шутки далеко не так уж безобидны.
После очередной такой выходки Клэра влезает в драку на глазах у всех школы и не с кем-нибудь, а с Роуз Карвер. Идеальной Роуз Карвер. Как итог – наказание для них двоих, а именно обязательная летняя работа в фургончике с едой отца Клэры. Целое лето в компании с девушкой, которую она ненавидит в фургончике, который она ненавидит ничуть не меньше, может ли это стать еще хуже?
Клэра замечательная главная героиня. Она неидельна, саркастична и цинична. Одним словом далеко не «правильная» героиня, которых обычно ожидаешь начиная подобные романы. У девушки полно отрицательных качеств, у нее определенно нет стоп-сигнала и она часто перегибает палку, но, что самое главное, по ходу событий девушка сильно меняется и растет. Их вражда/дружба с Роуз отличный тому пример. Обе всегда воспринимали друг друга в штыки, но совместная работа и общение заставляет девушек взглянуть друг на друга под новым углом. Клэра вдохновляется сильными сторонами Роуз, её решительностью, а Роуз учиться у своей «коллеги по несчастью» легче относиться к жизни.
Вообще, в книге замечательные персонажи. Я говорю не только о центральных героях, но и о второстепенных. Нет ни одного картонного персонажа. Отец Клэры – тот самый отец о котором мечтает каждая. Он веселый, любящий и преданный. Отец-одиночка, который в какой-то момент осознает, что все время был слишком лояльным родителем и даже не родителем, а скорее другом и теперь хочет это исправить, при этом не потеряв доверие и любовь дочери. Я вообще очень люблю, когда у главных персонажей в книгах родители с отличным чувством юмора и у которых очень теплые отношения с детьми, авторам таких книг плюс в карму лично от меня.
Следующим утром меня разбудил настойчивый стук в дверь.
— Что? — прокричала я из-под одеяла.
— Я захожу! — объявил Папа и чуть приоткрыл дверь. — Ты в приличном виде?
— Нет, я в кружевном халатике, — пробормотала я. — С каких это пор тебе важно, в «приличном» ли я виде?
Папа вошел в комнату.
— Не знаю, ты вчера была на свидании, поэтому...
Гамлет – любовный интерес героини, само очарование. Он милый, честный и очень открытый. Все его эмоции и чувства очень легко читаются и это очень привлекает. Да и вообще парочка из ехидной Клэры и такого светлого паренькаа кажется немного неловкой и забавной. Плюс, это, наверное, единственная книга на моей памяти, где оба главных героя азиаты (ну или наполовину, как Клэра).
Он совсем не мой типаж — обычно я западала на парней слегка истощавших и измученных. Этот парень выглядел свежим и энергичным: широкие плечи и худощавое, но мускулистое телосложение бегуна, густые волосы коротко острижены, но несколько волнистых прядей лезли в глаза, высокие скулы и самая прекрасная кожа, какой может похвастаться представитель мужского пола — он практически светился. Напоминал фотографию, которая выпадает при поиске «счастливый красивый азиатский парень».
Вообще, романтическая линия, хоть она и основная, совсем не затмевает множество других, очень важных тем поднятых в романе. Здесь и важная тема поисков себя, своего места в мире, современные проблемы отцов и детей, дружбы. Даже тема раннего брака, раскрытая через семью главной героини. Морин Гу показывает, что важно научиться нести ответственность за свои поступки, серьезнее относиться к жизни, но при этом любить себя и уметь расслабляться и веселиться.
А еще здесь очень много Лос-Анджелеса. Он так интересно показан в книге, что я сама захотела тут же собрать чемодан и отправиться в путешествие.
В общем, если вам нравится Морган Мэтсон и вы, в принципе, любите подростковые романы, то прям советую, а я точно еще раз перечитаю.

They Way You Make Me Feel follows high school prankster Clara who gets into one shenanigan too many and is forced to work on her dad's food truck with her arch nemesis all summer to pay off the damages from her latest prank gone wrong. Classic enemies to frenemies to friends plot line, for sure. I loved getting to know Type-A Rose who was Clara's foil in practically every way and seeing how they bonded over the work of running the truck (sometimes even on their own!) I loved learning the inner workings of the food truck and learning how the prepped the dishes, sourced the ingredients, and strategized their stops- food truck culture is such a big thing in the US and it was so cool to get a behind the scenes look at what it is like being involved in that culture. The dishes both on the truck and off of it (made by Clara's awesome dad) were mouth watering in their descriptions. I also want to take a moment to talk about Clara's dad, who is a "young single dad," a trope I feel like you don't see a lot in media or YA books, as it's usually the "young single mom." It was so cool seeing how close Clara and her dad were and how he transcended a lot of the masculine stereotypes about what it means to be a dad to be there for every important life event for Clara. Though Clara's mom isn't completely absent and does make appearances, I really appreciated the focus on a strong father figure in this story.
There was also a romance (isn't there always in contemporary YA?) that I actually really enjoyed! Hamlet (yes, Hamlet) was a total cinnamon role of a character and just so earnest and eager and I LOVED him. I loved his sign waving moves (which we're all familiar with, when you've seen one of those sign waving people on the sidewalk advertising for a store who gets SUPER into it), his relationship with his "grandparents" and his unabashed passion for the things he loved at an age where so much of what one chooses to say and do and disclose is in the pursuit of being cool. Actually, I'm starting to think I honestly really loved all of the characters in this book aside from the protagonist...
It's not that I completely hated Clara, she was just not for me. She definitely had an ARC, but I feel like she was just rude and really insincere for so much of the book that I had trouble connecting with her once she did learn her lesson. She definitely wasn't the worst YA protagonist I've ever read, but I feel like there's this growing trend in YA lit lately to make really plucky, sassy main characters, which isn't a bad thing- I feel like it's a foil to the boring, quiet, pale skinned-brown haired protagonists who dominated the genre for so many years during the mid 2000s. However, sometimes I feel like protagonists can veer into the realm of irritating and hard to sympathize with. I can literally list three major characters who I would be interested in reading spin off novels for before I'd pick up a sequel about Clara.
Overall: While protagonist Clara wasn't my favorite, I really enjoyed this story and the way it really captured the feeling of living in LA. There were some really fantastic secondary characters, and some really great family feels, especially regarding father daughter relationships. There's also some interesting smaller discussions surrounding the current era of "social media influencers" which I wasn't expecting but appreciated. Working on her father's food truck may have been Clara's punishment, but it ended up being the push Clara needed to grow, change, and deal with some of her personal demons.
•Pro: I am going to start with my favorite thing about this book - HAMLET! That boy was just all sorts of wonderfulness. He was sweet and charming, and the way he interacted with his nainai and yeye just warmed my heart.
•Pro: It took a while, but Clara grew on me. At first, she was kind of selfish, but she grew a lot over the course of this book, and eventually endeared herself to me.
•Pro: Clara's dad was quite terrific. He was a very young dad, and took Clara's latest debacle as a call to parenting arms. We later found out, that dad was doing quite a remarkable job even as a teen.
•Con: There were a few too many loose ends for me. The ending was thoughtful and very sweet, but there were a bunch of other things that happened with other characters in the book that were just left hanging out there.
•Pro: This story has romance, but it isn't a romance. It's about finding those people, who are important to you, being real with them, and showing them how much they mean to you.
•Pro: The bond between Clara and her dad was really special, and was one of my favorite relationships in the book. Clara learned a lot of new things about her dad, and developed a deeper appreciation for him. She also shared some special moments from her past with us, and I won't pretend that a tear or two didn't formed in my eyes.
•Pro: I was a fan of the friendship that developed between Rose and Clara. It was good to see Clara had someone, who could ground her, but also support her.
Overall: A lovely story of friends and family, which was filled with a delightful cast of characters, humor, and plenty of heartfelt moments.

Initial thoughts: The Way You Make Me Feel made me burst out laughing on several occasions. Clara has the most ridiculous ideas that put her in hot waters but she also a lot of heart. I loved the father-daughter relationship. I also enjoyed seeing how Clara changes over the summer, and how that affects her world views, her friendship and also her approach to romance.
This is Maurene Goo's third novel and I'm impressed by how far she's come. In her previous books, I thought that the secondary characters weren't developed enough. In The Way You Make Me Feel, I felt as though her characters were leaping off the pages because they each have a great deal of depth. Rose and Hamlet in particular are absolute darlings.
The ending is a little too condensed, in my opinion, but otherwise the pacing and plot are wonderful. I highly recommend this book for a dash of summer fun.

Clara's the one of those girls I wished I was when growing up. Apathetic, too cool for you, always has a comeback, fearless standing up to authority and in the pursuit of fun with guy friends. She is not nice nor considerate. She's not the usual teen girl protagonist or mean girl villian either.
Her single father is just as complex and varied. I love their relationship. Single parent-child relationships are different then with paired off couples. Given how common and normal it is, I don't actual see many in fiction.
Especially not with the mother that's away. I grew up with my dad while my mom was in another state and I never saw that part of my life in books growing up.
That was alone was enough to make me love this. But the good stuff keeps coming.
Rose is, as Clara puts is, an eager beaver overachiever and her exact opposite with anxiety. Hamlet is an actual good boy. All of them actually talk through issues, comfort and sharpen each other.
Some events are obvious before they happen. The ending is ridiculously cheesy. And we know nothing about the next school year.
But it's so damn good. YA contemp fans rejoice!
FYI: I haven't read her other book, I am waiting for my hold for it to come through now.
