After a bad season the poor mountain villagers, who pick cotton for their livelihood, are unable to pay their creditor, the shopkeeper Adil Effendi. Such a break with age-old tradition causes them to be overwhelmed with a sense of guilt. They wait in terror for Adil to come, but he fails to appear and in his inexplicable absence his figure swells till it fills their minds and they become sick with the apprehension of some terrible disaster. In their despair they look to tashbash, his innocent doubts and mental torment, the fate that comes upon him and the very apposite conclusion combine to make a moving story alive with acute observation of human nature, containing passages of lyrical beauty and deep compassion. Iron Earth, Copper Sk is the second volume of The Wind from the Plain trilogy, a sequel to The Wind from the Plain.
