"Microwave and RF Design" is a comprehensive introduction to RF and microwave design with a 'systems first' approach. System needs drive component and subsystem requirements. Similarly technology innovation enables new innovative system solution. This book presents a systems first approach to RF engineering design so that the reader learns to appreciate RF and microwave technology and design from this market-driven perspective. The book is organized around three modules that are largely independent but do build on each other and are best taught in sequence. First the System Module describes system concepts and provides comprehensive knowledge of RF and microwave systems. The System Module provides the rational for design choices. The Distribute Component Module shows in its four chapters how distributed effects are the basis of a large variety of microwave and RF components that are not available at lower frequencies. The Coupled Structure and Matching Module examines coupling effects of parallel lines and utilizes the knowledge gained in the design of microwave filters.
Design examples are used throughout the book, and many of them incorporate design tradeoffs that are only appreciated in the context of a specific design. The book is also characterized by design emphasis with discussion of manufacturability and practical design decisions. The book is arranged as three modules - the System Module contains Chapters 1-3, The Distributed Component Module contains Chapters 4-7, and the Coupled Structure and Matching Module 3 contains Chapters 8-10. Each can be taught independently of the others. Tested and improved over 10 years of teaching an associated course, the book as been refined to fully address common questions from students. Full sets of PowerPoint Slides and worked solutions to problems are available. Many examples and problems requiring detailed calculations have available MathCAD files. This book serves as a comprehensive RF and microwave reference book with detailed index, glossary and crossreferences throughout the text. The systems material is presented without the detailed signal processing surrounding the usual presentation of such systems material.
The systems presentation is not available anywhere else in a compact form, or in a form specifically addressing why RF and microwave design choices are made in response to system requirements. The reader gains valuable insight into how different technologies can be traded off in meeting system requirements.
