A description of hedgehogs and what they look like. A hedgehog's most unusual feature is its spines and the reader finds out how a hedgehog uses its spines to protect itself. However, a hedgehog's spines cannot protect it from human activity and the author points out that many hedgehogs are killed by cars, lawnmowers and pesticides. Further chapters describe where hedgehogs live, what they eat and how they survive through the winter. Reproduction and raising a family are clearly explained. Finally, the author gives guidance on how and when to keep a hedgehog as a pet and explains how the reader can help hedgehogs to survive in the winter.
