For me, there is something remarkable about the ability of a single photograph to convey the circumstances and emotions associated with an entire event and, in cases, compel people to act, says author and photographer Chris Weston. For the most part this is a book about photographic technique, camera equipment and wildlife. At the same time, it is a book about so much more. The vision for the "Through a Nikon Lens" series derived from a desire to showcase superlative images and to reveal the equipment and techniques that made them possible. And, for this particular title in the series, the author wanted to share not so much his personal view of wildlife and habitat, rather to provide a glimpse into our natural world from the animals' perspectives. The images compiled here were shot over a six-year period from 2001 to 2006. They were captured using a range of equipment, from the pro-sumer F90X film camera to the latest in professional specification digital technology, and often utilizing equipment and techniques rarely written about in books.
The habitat covered ranges from sub-Arctic wilderness to tropical rain forest and practically everything in between, across four continents and a wide range of species, from some of our closest living relatives, to our most dangerous competitors; our literary enemies to species we have driven to the edge of extinction. While this book is about photographic technique, camera equipment and wildlife, it is also about what compels us to pick up a camera at all. It is about the hidden depths of the photographic art and its ability to interpret visually the deeper meanings of the natural world. It is about communication and communicating, it is about love and laughter, it is about movement and camouflage and action and reaction. It is about all those things that together form life. And all captured through a Nikon lens.
