Experts agree that colleges and universities must dramatically improve how they teach science, mathematics, engineering and technology (SME&T). This text proposes that technology itself holds the key to revolutionizing postsecondary SME&T education. The work explores the use of information technology in education within a framework of three broad visions: pedagogy - it discusses visualization, simulation, and other IT capabilities that can alleviate the "mile wide/inch deep" curriculum that has been blamed for the poor performance of US students on international assessments; learning - the book examines how IT can translate theory and research into daily student experience, addressing student motivation, gender differences, and more; and access - the book elaborates on using IT to link learners around the globe. The committee makes recommendations to help educators integrate IT into SME&T programmes, including setting appropriate goals, avoiding common pitfalls, assessing outcomes, ensuring that innovations are sustainable, and managing costs.
