I give readers an insight into the life and personality of Charles Dickens and the trail he left behind in East Kent. One of the world's greatest novelists spent countless hours walking on the chalk cliffs and visiting the beautiful villages of Thanet, so he could receive inspiration for his many novels, stories and plays. He stayed in Broadstairs and the surrounding areas many times between 1837 and 1859. Dickens discovered this beautiful part of Kent when he was writing his first novel, Pickwick Papers, and it soon became his favourite seaside resort. Several of his famous characters were formed in his mind, while walking along the cliff tops and admiring the stunning scenery. Today you can stand on the cliff overlooking Viking Bay and virtually see the Broadstairs he described in 'Our English Watering Place'. Thankfully he left behind a fascinating trail; a trail, which I have endeavoured to follow in this book. Written in a friendly style, with pictures, this book is enjoyable, easy to read and small enough to carry around with you when following in Dickens' footsteps.
