Although Fenwick Travers is a cheating, drunken, sycophantic libertine; a charlatan; an adulterous, cowardly, gluttonous blackguard; a bounder; a dastardly, caddish, philandering mountebank; a poltroon; a besotted, lecherous, scheming toady; a roue; a sybaritic rapscallion; and a rakehell, he remains a thoroughly lovable fellow, an enduring character upon whom the completely undeserved mantle of "all-American hero" manages to rest easily. In Fenwick Travers and the Years of Empire, we followed Fenny from Indian-fighting in Arizona to West Point, on to San Juan Hill, and finally to Peking for the Boxer Rebellion. Now Lieutenant Travers is off to the Philippines, newly acquired from Spain in the recent war. While there he happens on a treasure map that leads him on a series of adventures which sorely tests his ingenuity as he searches for the treasure, all the while attempting to avoid any danger to himself. The results are predictably hilarious as Fenny finds his honor sorely tried but manages not to let it interfere overmuch with his riotous enjoyment of all that life has to offer.
