This is an essay by Ulrich Wilmes. For this installation in the Museum Ludwig, Koln, Cristina Iglesias created an architectonic construction consisting of a latticework of flat metal ribbons, which have been galvanized and patinated. A fundamental aspect of her sculptural concept, developed consistently in judicious steps, is the description of a place or, more precisely, the notion of a place. During this process, Iglesias takes her inspiration from texts fragments which, within their story, also have a descriptive function. She transforms the images that form in her mind whilst she reads, wholly independent of their content or narrative function. Her work is characterized by a complex fusion of different artistic disciplines, extending beyond her self-perception as a sculptor into the realms of architecture and photography as well as, in a very specific sense, into the field of literature.
