The study examines government handling or industrial unrest in the decade following the end of World War II, with a view to assessing the degree of continuity between the Attlee and Churchill administrations. The first part looks at the Attlee governments' response to the wave of unofficial strikes after 1945. An examination is made of the re-establishment of an energencies supply organization to deal with the effects of large scale stoppage, and of the use of troops and emergency powers to break strikes. Attempts by the governments to control thre coverage of strikes by the BBC are also examined. Part two deals with the return of a conservative administration under Winston Churchill. By comparing Churchill's handling of industrial unrest with Attlee's, an assessment is made of the degree of continuity in industrial relations policy over the decade.
