When the Chinese Army invaded South Korea in 1951, a thin line of United Nations' troops had to gain time for the UN to prepare defences to protect the capital, Seoul. One British regiment faced the heaviest assault, and it fought to the death over a period of four days, an epic last stand that saw 800 British soldiers take on at least 10,000 Chinese troops. The British soldiers were not SAS or Commandos: they were mostly national servicemen, called up for the Korean War. Why did they fight with such superhuman courage, and cold-blooded professionalism, for a hillside in Korea that didn't even have a name? How did they hold on for so long? What kept them going in the ghastly North Korean prison camp to which the survivors were despatched, after they were finally overrun? Mike Asher will tell the story through interviews with the survivors. Reviewers have picked out his battle descriptions as especially gripping: HILL 235 will be the British equivalent to WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE - AND YOUNG.
