The Unlikely Canon works at two levels. It tells the dramatic and human story of one man, and his friends and family caught up in the dramatic events leading up to the British civil wars of the 17th century. It follows them through the turns and twists of the Republic, Restoration and Glorious Revolution, including the Great Fire and the Plague centring on George Evans, an ordinary schoolboy from St Albans born in 1630, the same year as Charles II. Against all the odds, the two eventually meet as a result of the upheavals of the civil war. Secondly it explores a well researched picture of the moderating role many thoughtful Christians played in those traumatic years. It introduces a little known circle from those times who strove to put Christian love before political expediency and on the whole they turn out to be not only an unlikely lot but also likeable- always a plus if you are looking for an uplifting read.
