This collection of writing about the countryside is intended as a record of "the spirit and letter of village life in the decade following the Great War". Living in a remote part of North Devon, the author shared the village with such people as Charlie Tucker, "Sailor" Zeale, Old Sparker and describes the days when adders were called longcripples, tomtits were known as ackymals and the cliffs echoed to the peregrine's cry. It is also a world of small dramas - the death of a favourite cow, a badger dig, courting couples and a comical local bobby chasing burglars.
