This book of poetry by West Viginia native and author Philip Jarrett transcends the nostalgia that often blurs the harsh realities of his home state. His deft use of rhythm and rhyme serves as a reminder of what was lost when free verse became the only acceptible mode of presentation. Ignoring the limitations inherent in the label of 'primitive art' he brings a sophistication to forgotten forms that must be read to be appreciated. He is in his late fifties and his subject matter is adult. These poems are not intended for children, bearing in mind that maturity is seldom related to chronological age. Though he recognizes some may be offended by a few of his poems, his intent is not to offend but to illuminate. He bears no ill will to those he offends, but rather encourages them to turn off the light and go back to sleep.
