On The Rise As the 2000 season got underway, the Rebels discovered themselves placed 18th in the AP survey, thanks in big part to McAllister and Miller, both of whom were back for their senior years. Eli settled in as Miller's backup and saw little playing time. Ole Miss went 7-5 and earned a berth against West Virginia in the Music City Bowl. That's where Eli got his first real possibility to shine. Down 49-16 in the fourth quarter, the Rebels needed a stimulate. Cutcliffe placed Eli, and he played remarkably. The redshirt freshman finished 12 of 20 passes for 167 lawns and three touchdowns. While that wasn't enough to secure a victory, the teenager's sparkling performance gave the world a taste on exactly what waited for when he took the helm in 2001.
