This book is a monetary history of the People's Republic of China, analyzing the period between 1949 and 1988. It aims to be an institutional, historical and empirical study of the role of money in modern China. As well as examining the macroeconomic aspects, the book answers such questions as: What is money in modern China? Why dies it have value? Where does it come from? Where does it go to? How much of it is there? Who has it? and What is the relationship between money and prices in China? It seeks to provide a comparative perspective in both theoretical and empirical terms. It reviews the basics of Western monetary theory, the major controversies in the interpretation of monetary events in planned socialist economies and the monetary economics of developing contries. Peebles judges between the relevance of two schools of Western monetary theory for analyzing events in China viewing China's monetary history from a comparative empirical perspective.
