Alan Evans took darts out of the working men's clubs of South Wales and on to the nation's TV screens. Backed by an army of passionate followers, his skills hit unknown heights, while his outlandish theatrics celebrating winning doubles made him the sport's hottest property. The first full-time darts professional, Evans became almost as well known for his Cuban heels, his Elvis suits and pink Rolls-Royce. Chat-show spots and a darts match against Muhammad Ali further raised his profile; but the hustler still loved nothing more than a man-to-man money match. When Evans won the British Open and World Masters titles in 1975 he was regarded as the best player in the world, but ill health and a series of scrapes, on and off the oche, prevented him from winning the World Professional title. He left us too early at 49, but this true tungsten treasure will never be forgotten.
