The Gods are dead. Humans have gone from worshiping Athena, Apollo, and all their brethren - and moved to worshiping the dollar, technology, and other things. At least, that's the general idea. But what if the gods *aren't* dead - only weaker and living out their long lifespans among those very humans who have forgotten them? Selene is one such god - having lived so long, she has forgotten what it was to be at her full powers...and what it sounded like when one of her believers cried to her for help. When a young woman is murdered in what appears to be a ritual killing, The Protector of Innocents - also known as Artemis - vows revenge.

I have had this book on my "must read" list for so long, it's a bit silly. I would pick it up at a bookstore, and put it down again, always worried it wouldn't be as good as I had heard. I finally gave in to the siren's call - and I am so glad I did. The history and mythology woven into the story is excellent, and it's just a great story of love, friendship, family - and yes, revenge. I am looking forward to picking up the newly-released sequel soon!
