Based on the author's original "VMEbus User's Handbook", this companion has been updated and expanded, and aims to provide all users and potential users of VMEbus with an essential companion to the bus specification itself. The book claims that the majority of problems encountered by VMEbus users are caused by a lack of understanding of its concepts, and, more importantly, the interaction of the bus hardware and software. The number of products available mean that the bus has become not only the automatic choice for many designs but a low cost method of building and designing computers for both engineers and students alike. However, it still poses a challenge for engineers and students coming from a microprocessor background as many of its techniques have come down from the mini and mainframe computers. This new edition has been completely updated and expanded to take account of all significant changes, suppliers and products. The new VME64 specifications and data transfers, as well as additional information on techniques for writing software for VMEbus hardware and operating systems, are included.
Also given are details on peripheral buses such as SCSI and ST506 which can be difficult to find. Thus the book is a most comprehensive information source for all users and potential users of the VMEbus and for students of electronics and computing.
