This text draws on a variety of theories to provide an innovative approach to autism that recognises it as a social ad interpersonal phenomenon, as opposed to the usual clinical/medical or psychological perspectives. The author argues that since autism manifests itself largely as a social communication disorder, it should be examined from a sociological as well as a psychological viewpoint if the condition is to be properly understood.
