We must be filled with the Spirit. There can be no doubt that this is the only way we will ever be able to serve God effectively, whether in praying or in preaching or teaching - or indeed in every day living. But does this mean that we must have the gift of speaking in tongues? Some Christians say that it does; some Christians say No. Others say they are not sure. Cor Bruins is sure and has made a detailed study of one of the key texts in Scripture - 1 Corinthians 14. This book is a distillation of his findings. He carefully studies the chapter and compares NIV, KJV, JND and the original Greek. Cor Bruins gently points out that we humans are prone to extremes and that we must be very careful in our approach to the whole issue. Fanaticism is not the same thing as Spirit-filled living. God is sovereign and we cannot dictate to Him how He is to work amongst His people. He is also, however, consistent and we must expect Him to work in accordance with His word. How important it is then for us to know what His word says, so that we can test our practice by His expressed will.
