Nazi Gold was inspired by Richard's trip to the Canaries, where he picked up a local magazine and the word 'Nazi Colonel' jumped out at him. The man, Colonel Winter, built a beautiful villa in the middle of a dust bowl. He said, as did his wife after he died, that he came to grow crops. But after a visit to the villa, it became clear this was a lie; the ground wasn't fertile enough for even weeds to grow there. Interest in Colonel Winter grew as Richard dug deeper and discovered that two of the U-boats had not been numbered - but all had been accounted for, except one. That one boat had been sunk off the island of Fuerteventura. Inside the shipwreck are tons of gold that were headed for Argentina. Who knows what else was heading there? Richard explores this in Nazi Gold.
