I don’t think you need to know who grumpy cat is to find this cute comic collection a fun read. But i’d be shocked if you hadn’t ever heard of her.

Grumpy Cat Volume 1 is a humorous, quick and light hearted read about two cats who are polar opposites personality wise and the mischief they get up to.

I think it’d be the perfect thing to have in a waiting room /coffee table as it would appeal to a large age range, who doesn’t like a grumpy cat and there isn’t anything in there anyone can get offended about.

Grumpy Cat reminds me of 90’s Garfield. With Grumpy Cat we get humor and sarcasm. She is grumpy yet adorable, loves food, loves to sleep and has a dog and Pokey to reign over. There are haunted houses, broken smart phones, stolen treats, revenge (against the dog) and more.

I give It Three “I Liked It” Stars.

This was not quite what I expected, although after revisiting the NetGalley page it made more sense. It is actually classified as 'Children's Fiction'. I was expecting more of the ironic internet meme type of Grumpy cat, where this was a very juvenile, Grumpy cat who actually reminded me a lot of Garfield. There were a lot of stories in this comic and I think it would be perfect for a young reader maybe in the 8-12 range. For me, however, I found it a little bit tedious. The art was wonderful, and had so many different feels that really brought the stories to life. I probably won't continue on in this series, but I would recommend young readers consider picking this up!

Did you ever pick up a book, only to find it's geared for a completely different age group?

There was one big problem with this graphic novel rendition of Grumpy Cat, and it's that it's been done. It's been done, and done much better. It's called Garfield.

The short stories made it feel like a comic strip, the relationship between Grumpy Cat, Pokey and the dog were so similar to Garfield and Odie that I forgot what I was reading for a few moments and the tiny insular plots didn't really feel all that relevant. It lacked the humour of Garfield, but at least it did have some pretty great art.

There are so many Grumpy Cat memes out there that I'd just spend some time trawling through pages of google images for a laugh rather than spending any time and money on this graphic novel adaptation.
