'The Cut Pages' is either a long prose poem or an experimental prose text: the definitiion is open. It was first printed in the eponymous Fulcrum Press book in 1971, but was subsequently left out of the collected editions of the author's poems. The genesis of the piece is explained in a new introdcution by the author especially written for this edition. In the original edition the author described his aim in writing the piece as being 'to give the words as much relief as possible from serving in planned situations; so the work was taken forward with no programme beyond the principle that it should not know where its next meal was coming from ...This method produced very rapid changes of direction.'
