This book is a long-awaited contribution to the literature on Edvard Munch and his activities as a printmaker. It is a valuable reference work for print experts and Munch enthusiasts alike. Munch's graphic works have fascinated people all over the world for more than a hundred years. He himself arranged a number of exhibitions of his prints, and was represented in many print rooms and important private collections in Europe before World War II. When he died in 1944, Munch bequeathed his vast collection of some 18,000 prints to the City of Oslo. In 1963, the Munch-museet opened its doors to the public, and since the bequest has shown Munch's prints in numerous exhibitions. The author's extensive research and the enormous attention to detail in the individual entries should make this the standard reference work for many years to come. For several decades Gustav Schiefler's two catalogues, from 1907 and 1928, have been the main source of information on Munch's graphic work, proving particularly useful for art dealers, curators, collectors and art historians. However, there are a number of reasons why a new catalogue raisonne of Munch's prints has been eagerly awaited.
Firstly, Munch continued his graphic work almost until his death in 1944, creating many new pieces that are not mentioned in Schiefler's, or any other, catalogues. Secondly, access to the Munch-museet's vast collection of prints, together with substantial documentary material, has brought about important new data. The text gives informative details about technique, editions, states, versions, reprints and where to find impressions in public collections. There are also detailed descriptions of the many surviving lithographic stones, wood blocks and metal plates in the Munch-museet. Finally, this new catalogue raisonne includes photographs of all the 748 registered prints (many in colour), making it an indispensible tool for professionals, but also a beautiful art book for anyone fascinated by Edvard Munch's pioneering contribution to the art of print
