Tom Taylor and Elizabeth, his young musician wife, are both bruised from previous relationships brutally ended, although Tom is unaware that his relationship with his former wife contains unfinished business. Tom and Elizabeth encounter Ellen Woodcock, whose life is devoted to the mysterious and gifted painter George de la Tour, whose work inspires passionate feelings in both of them. It soon becomes clear that their straightforward new start is in fact something more complex, involving practical and moral decisions which can only be worked out through experience and living.
