A poet whose being was nurtured in a landscape divided by competing conflicts, Kathleen struggled to cross bridges and 'bridge those crosses' ('Lagan') from a position of marginality. Readers will recognise in this collection Kathleen's familiar intellectual and emotional insistence on the need to reverence the spirit. This is nowhere more pronounced than in the final line of the title poem, where Kathleen observes that in order to greet the spirit we need 'To tune the strings to meet her pulsing waves.' It is in performing this act of generosity, the greeting of the spirit, that the reader will hear, once more, Kathleen's unique voice.
