Physicians, lawyers, engineers, architects, financial analysts, and other professionals articulate an increasing need for support by intelligent workstations for decision making, analysis, communication, and other activities. This volume is comprised of a collection of papers presented at a symposium and workshop held at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1992. Requirements from potential users, studies of their behaviour as well as approaches and aspects for technical realization of "intelligent" functions are introduced. Eight contributions deal with the latest findings of the UNIS (User's Needs for Intelligent Systems) project, aiming to identify needs and wishes from professionals for intelligent support systems and the potential adoption of such systems. Other papers concentrate on new approaches and techniques that enhance the "intelligence" of future workstations. They tackle such issues as architectural trends in workstation design, the combination of workstations with HDTV and speech processing, automatic reading and understanding of documents, the automated development of software and the processing of inexact knowledge.
